The folly and tragedy of Vietnam *cough* I mean Korea were addressed on that show, along with the very real consequences to both soldiers and the civilian population. but it was a TV show that openly criticized an ongoing American war, albeit with barely plausible deniability. I mean, yeah it was pretty sexist, and yeah it had dumb sitcom moments. ![]() I read somewhere years ago that Richard Hooker, author of the novel on which the movie was based, loved the movie but hated the series in later years because he thought it started taking itself too seriously and got too preachy.īurn_Atlanta: No Such Agency: M*A*S*H really was a great show. era but I think it was pretty amazing at the time.Īlso, Hot Lips and Frank were one of the best parts of the show. I know that doesn't impress much now, in the post-"Three Kings"/"Generation Kill" etc. Inept and vainglorious military commanders were the rule rather than the exception, and blind patriotism was shot down at every opportunity. No Such Agency: M*A*S*H really was a great show. Though I would say Sally was certainly better looking and aged better. The biggest difference between the film's Frank Burns and the one in the series was that they pretty much eliminated the overbearing religious nature of Burns for the TV show, substituted some hunger for power but Duvall's version was probably a little smarter.Larry Linville's Burns was more of a clown, he was incompetent but not as creepy, you couldn't see the tv show Frank Burns blaming the death of a patient on an orderly who had nothing to do with it, just to be cruel.īut Hot Lips was never than bright in the movie and got way more stupid after the shower tent scene, while Hot Lips on the show may have mellowed, she never lost her intellect or her professionalism. ![]() ![]() That's a bold statement, but you might be on to something from an acting ability point of view.Īs for the characters themselves, though, I think the show did them better. Farker Soze: Sally Kellerman and Robert Duvall were infinitely better than the scrubs they got for the series.
